The course "International conflicts and contemporary Russian strategy" covers theoretical conflict issues such as conflict, war, parties, causes, conflict dynamics and complexity, conflict process, peace agreement, reconciliation with a special focus on international conflict resolution premises and processes. The political challenges that the parties face in each stage of the conflict process are given a particular attention, including the initiation of negotiations, the achievement of a settlement and the implementation of peace-building measures. When looking at parties roles in the conflict, a specific focus is given to peace-building facilitating actors and to spoilers of its successful implementation. The regional context of the conflict and the position of third parties and international community is highlighted. Besides, the course addresses issues such as the role of peacekeepers and civil society, security guarantees, and economic development. The course looks at the Russian international strategy in general, and, in particular, at Russian strategic positioning towards both contemporary and past international conflicts.
